Description

Many of the items you see in this category are contemporary weavings or commercial serapes simply called Saltillo, or Saltillo Style. The weaves are very loose, the colors vibrant and modern. Some have openings to fit over a head and wear as serapes. Some are older serapes with more muted colors, but none are what what we offer here.
A classic 19th-century Mexican Saltillo weaving, late 1800's-early 1900's
These beautiful textiles originated in Mexico. They are very finely woven tapestries, with a border, vertically oriented background design and serrated center diamond. Some of the classic Saltillos have what is described as a lozenge shape as opposed to the diamond shape in the center. The Saltillos were owned by the wealthy elite landowners of the time, the
hacenderos
. When Mexico gained independendence from Spain, the Saltillos were a symbol of national pride.
HISTORY COURTESY CHIMAYO WEAVERS
SIZE:  56" x 78"
This weaving has not been professionally cleaned yet. It is in its original condition. As such it shows stained areas. There is an area in the seam that joins to two parts that is beginning to open. Note: True Saltillos are woven in two identical sections and sewn together.
There is a small hole in one corner
that might have been made to hang this weaving.
Even though it is made of wool, the weaving has no  moth damage. In the close-up you can see how tight the construction is.
The reverse side is the same as the front side.
This Saltillo was bought in a Fine Indian Arts Show in Greenwich, CT. in or about 1990.
