Description
This is a great vintage condition weaving that can be used as a rug or wall-hanging to enhance any Southwestern or Hacienda style decor. This nicely hand-woven rug dates to circa mid-century (1940-1960s) and features a vivid red, black, gray and cream design. Please note that we did have this viewed by two rug experts who both agreed this was hand-woven. One of the experts did appraise the piece for us and the information below is a summary of what we learned from that appraisal.
The rug has a wide black border on the short sides and a narrow black border on the long sides of the rug. There are short black tassels on each corner of the rug. The inner border of the short sides of the rug are white, the long sides of the rug have a white sawtooth edge border on each side. There is a triangle on each of the corners of the rug. The main background color of the rug is grey and the central design is a large stepped, elongated diamond shape outlined in black; the background color of the central design is red on which there is a design in white with five sawtooth edged protrusions; the bottom and the top of the white design has squares with a half-stepped triangle on the top of the squares. There are two elongated rectangles, the ends of which have a black rectangle. The inner motif is a grey square with an elongated grey rectangle on the top and the bottom of the square.
The main central motif suggests a Mesoamerican Mexican Aztec glyph done in a contemporary style. These Zapotec glyphs commemorate conquests in the valley of Oaxaca, Mexico. The central designs can be translated: it is a monument called conquest slabs and usually contain vertical glyphic sequences - a variable glyph, a "mountain" glyph, and an inverted head - on this rug, there are two inverted heads (top and bottom), and a hill glyph. The inverted heads are interpreted as the defeated enemy.
NOTE: While this piece has the coloring of Navajo Ganado and Two Grey Hills rugs, the four corners of the rug and sawtooth edges suggest the Navajo sacred mountains and patterns, and the central design is comparable to a Navajo Ganado rug design, we DO NOT believe or represent that this rug was made by members of the Navajo tribe. It is believed to have been made by native people of Mexico, like perhaps by a Zapotec artistan. It is, however, a very lovely, hand-woven and vividly patterned piece that deserves respect in its own right as being difficult to make and taking many hours of work by a talented artist as it is beautifully executed.
Additional details from our inspection and related to condition are below. The last few pictures show the minor damage detailed, all of which was taken into account already within the appraised value.
The weaving approximately measures 68 inches long x 45.5 inches wide. Weighs approximately 5 lbs. The color palette is striking with vivid medium dark crimson red, black, and cream.
Condition: Colors are vivid and appear to not be faded, or at least not faded to the point of being noticeable...still very rich colors. We did not see any obvious bleeding of the red or other colors which is always nice for these vintage weavings as show has not been improperly washed in the past.
No major holes, tears, stains, etc. There is one small (pencil eraser head size) hole in the red center design as seen in main picture (if you can see) and then close-up in last two pictures, in which a small amount of red fiber is missing but the warp is still present. This shows up a little more on one side (as seen in picture of that side) but is a very small imperfection when viewed from either side. Also, there is one other spot where there is not really a hole but there is an eraser size spot that has thinner red fibers that could perhaps turn into a hole. See third from last picture for close-up.
Otherwise, there is some minor wear on the fibers but overall the fibers are in good condition for suspected age. There are a few milder discolorations on the cream color that appear to be surface soiling. We did not wash the piece for fear of ruining, especially since the colors have not bled or faded. The rug is not dirty though and so we don't think you would necessarily have to clean before display/usage.
We purchased at an estate sale and so have no history on this item.
We priced this piece below the lowest auction value for which this piece was appraised. As you may know, the auction value is considerably less than retail or insurance value. So, we feel this is a fair price for this beautiful piece. Thank you.
