The egg is 'cracked' in half with jagged edges so when the top is removed it allows you to put the egg inside and put the top on until you are ready to eat.

This egg cup set is from the estate of a man who was known by family and friends as someone who had a soft boiled egg every day of his life. He was also known to bring egg cups with him as he traveled throughout Asia, the Pacific Islands, North America, Central America, and Europe. Often he would purchase unique egg cups to add to his collection as a remembrance of his travels.  His pieces of his entire collection are being listed on eBay.
